Descriptions

Solar Eclipse Timer is your smart phone guide for a total solar eclipse. It's like having your own personal astronomer help you on Eclipse Day! It is simple to use and has many unique features! Just get into the path of totality for the solar eclipse, and then with just 2 taps on your device, the app is ready to "talk" you through the eclipse. (Note: It's not useful if you are only going to be in a partial eclipse, it's for being in the path of totality)

I have observed 3 previous total solar eclipses overseas and I am doing public out reach for the 2017 US total solar eclipse. The first version of this program was developed by me in 2002. Being based on my personal experience with eclipse observing and photography, I know exactly what is helpful when observing a total solar eclipse.

Created for first-time eclipse observers as well as veteran eclipse chasers, it is released in time to prepare everyone for the August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people and Solar Eclipse Timer is an inexpensive tool to ensure that you don't miss a second of this wonderful event!

GPS location functions automatically find your location, then the app calculates your contact times and max eclipse. With one tap it loads the 4 eclipse contact times into the timers. This function does not require an internet connection, the formula is located in the app itself!

These are all the unique features in this app:
Voice countdowns guide you precisely to the contact times. Announcements are made at the proper times to tell you to observe for interesting things during the partial phases, such as the temperature drop, lighting changes, animal behavior and shadow bands. The app also tells you when it is safe to take your solar glasses off and then when you must put them back on. To practice your plan for photography, the app has a demo session that plays a totality movie synchronized with the timers. The app includes a unique calculator that lists the times you use to take a sequence of partial phase images that creates a beautiful sequence of the phases just like the professional photographers! Although not a mapping program, included are internet hyperlinks to interactive maps of the eclipse path to help guide you to totality.
The app includes an extensive help file detailing the use of all of its unique features as well as eclipse day checklists and educational information about the partial phase phenomena.

Download the app, get yourself into the path of totality, tap a few buttons and sit back and let Solar Eclipse Timer "talk" you through this spectacular celestial event! It's an experience you will never forget!

No App Ads. No In-App Purchases. You Get It All!

ALWAYS USE EYE PROTECTION DURING THE PARTIAL PHASES OF A SOLAR ECLIPSE! OR EVEN WHEN IT IS BRIGHT! NOT DOING SO CAN CAUSE EYE DAMAGE!

We are NOT liable for misuse of the app causing inaccurate timing or the lack of eye safety precautions during the observation of a solar eclipse.

The "glasses off" and "glasses on" statements are a guide based on the calculated contact times. The timing can be affected by your phone's clock and the shape of the shadow. You are responsible the timing. Glasses should be ON if it's bright!

Love it!! I live in Wyoming, fortunately, for many reasons, have figured out the App, will be in the path of totality on August 21, smartphone, eclipse glasses, and camera in hand ready to listen to my C1, C2, C3, and C4 prompts! I wasn't nearly as excited about the eclipse until I saw the video about your App on Facepaste. Glad I did. Thank you for the time and effort you have devoted to make this happen!! Full Review

Not sure if this will work for me, as I am in Hawaii, and we only get a partial eclipse here, but I am hoping to find some use from it. I plan to come to the Mainland in 2024 and possibly Australia in 2023. Will it still work for those? Full Review

It's a bit frustrating that when I manually enter latitude/longitude coordinates, they don't stick so I can't load the timers with it. Also annoying is not being able to see the timers in a partial eclipse location - between these two "features" of the app in having a hard time testing it out ahead of time. P.S. I saw your post on Cloudy Nights - that's where I read about your app. Full Review

Great app, easy to use. I saw the smarter every day video and decided to buy and give this app a try. Luckily (already knew this) I live in the middle of the lines and I will have a 2 minute 39 second viewing time, but it's nice to get the contact times so I don't have to figure those out. I'm a professional photographer, living in Oregon, right in the middle of the Path of Totality. Although I've been shooting for 50+years, this will be my very first solar eclipse, so I knew I was going to need some help and guidance. This app is really a TEN-STAR APP...and has so much information and is so detailed, that I wonder how Gordon can afford to provide all that high-tech help, at such a reasonable cost! Try it...you will be so impressed...you will tell all your friends to buy and use it too!! Thank you Gordon, for your creativity, and your talents! Full Review

I used the links to the other maps provided in the app to enter my exact location I will be when watching the eclipse. All seems to be working great & says I'm in a good spot. However, once I load times into the main screen it says totality duration is zero. I know this isn't the case since I will be about 1-1.5 miles from the center of the totality line & the other map says total solar duration is 2.39 min Full Review

Would be much better if it didn't talk and beep during the total phase of the eclipse, especially since the voice is so stern and joyless and the beep is so annoying. Asked the dev to provide a silent option for totality but he refused. His "reason" was that he'd have to drive to the eclipse path to test any changes. But he's put out two updates since then so he was either lying to me or he hasn't tested the last two changes. Full Review

This app is really cool! Going to use it in August. The only thing is that in order to see times in your timezone, you have to be in path of totality. Otherwise it just gives you UTC. I'd like to be able to tell people when the eclipse is for them, even if they're not going to travel to the path of totality. Full Review

Even though the eclipse isn't for a while I had the app find my location and check the times just see what it would say and what I can expect from my location like I saw in a YouTube video. Problem is that made the app think the eclipse was happening that day. It kept giving me reminders and I couldn't make them stop. I tried clearing the data, resetting it, etc. Even when it stopped showing the time for the eclipse it wouldn't stop. My only options were to deny the app permission for notifications or uninstall it. Full Review

Found this app after watching smarter everyday. I might have a dislike though. How do I change my location? I see the long/ lat option. But that is a pain in the ass. There should be an easy way to change your location. Like a zoomable Google map link where I can zoom in to where I plan on being during the eclipse. And then have it automatically enter the long/lat into the app. But for now I will look up my aunt's house in Ketchum id. Then get the long/lat. Hope that it's the correct format of long/ lat. Physically enter it into the app. And plan accordingly. But who knows. I might be an idiot and there could be a way to do that just like I said. Thanks for the app. And thanks for sharing your knowledge on Smarter everyday. Update in response to the reply from foxwood. Really? That's really your reasoning behind not having that option? I would bet that the Majority of users do and will have cell service while looking at the eclipse. Why you want to accommodate the minority? Why not have the option to look at a map and also the ability to manually enter the coordinates? This app is proving to be useless. The app resets itself when cutting/ pasting the coordinates. So the numbers reset when go back and forth between pages. There are much better apps out there and they are free. Don't waste your money. Full Review

The app is great and very useful. Eclipse phenomena pass by very quickly, and it's great to have a timer app that will not only calculate times based on GPS location, but will talk to you so you don't have to take your eyes off the eclipse to look at the phone. The devs know what is needed in such an app and they gave it to us. Full Review
